As such it can be a big concern as to how best to securely dispose of your computer, after all, you don't want the wrong people getting hold of all this information!
Evolve offer's a FREE recycling service, which is all well and good to say, but what happens to your computer?
- First, your hard disk drive is formatted. This process effectively erases the file allocation table (which contains information on where exactly files are stored) and overwrites it with a new table.
- Secondly, we use a fantastic software called DBAN (or Darik's Boot and Nuke) which overwrites every single bit of data several times, thus making it impossible for even the best files recovery software to recover any data.
- We then test the hard disk drive, should it be technically sound it will be stored for later use either internally or as part of a repair (unless the customer has stated physical destruction is required).
- If physical destruction is required by the customer, or if the drive is not technically sound, the hard disk drive is fully disassembled. The 'platters', which have data written to them, are scoured with sandpaper to destroy the surface, then the platters are bent in half. At this point the data that may have been on the drive is absolutely destroyed beyond any hope of ever being able to carry out recovery.
As for the rest of the computer?
It is fully dismantled and each part independently tested. Any reusable parts are stored for use in future repairs or to be utilised in-house. Any non-reusable components are responsibly recycled.
So you see, at Evolve we take your data and it's security very seriously because we understand that you do too.
